This past weekend, scouts from Troop 210 went on their first backpacking trip since the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic. Determined scouts Hayden, Mason, Trenton, Nick, J.P, and Johnathan participated in the trek up the hill. And then back down the hill. And then up an even bigger hill. And then why not scramble over that random rock over there? They were accompanied by leaders Mr. Trever, Mr. Scott, and Mrs. Tracey.
After a long car ride up to Uwharrie National Forest (located in Troy, North Carolina), scouts stopped at the head of the trail for a quick bagged lunch, before beginning the grueling journey. The first few miles were much more hilly than was expected, and after a few miles, the scouts were exhausted. So after stopping for a much-needed water/snack break to refill their water bottles at a stream (and making friends with Gary the Snail), they were ready to complete the next few miles. Crossing over various streams and rivulets, Trenton was fascinated with the waterproof qualities of his new hiking boots. After about six miles, scouts stopped to set up camp for the night, and prepared their luxurious dinner of freeze-dried mac-n-cheese (plus an excellent freeze-dried lasagna for Johnathan). After watching a hilarious collapse of J.P.'s camping chair, most of the scouts then went to bed; exhausted from the taxing day. In the morning, scouts were greeted by a bitter cold – poor timing for the first cold snap of the season. After pulling Trenton out of bed and warming up with a nice, hot breakfast of freeze-dried eggs (and one very cold bagel), it was back to the trail to complete the final six miles of the hike. After a few more hours (and a few confusions over which trail to take), the scouts emerged from the trail, and had a massive lunch at a nearby subway. All in all, this hiking trip was a refreshing return to the trail for the scouts. Though it was incredibly tiring, there was still many bonding moments throughout, and we look forward to the next one!

Last Thursday, February 18, we held our bi-annually troop elections! These elections are vital in scout advancement and help give the scouts of our troop valuable experience in leading others. Congratulations! Senior Patrol Leader - Nick Bramhall Assistant Senior Patrol Leader - Samuel Olski Scribe - Drew McLeoud Chaplain Aide - Allen Michael Kraus Order of the Arrow Representative - Hayden Kresge Webmaster - Johnathan Strickland Troop Guide - Tyler Keill Troop Instructor - N/A Bugler - Benjamin Anderson A further explanation of these roles can be found under the "positions" tab. Not even COVID-19 can stop the scouts of Troop 210 and 1210 from serving our community! Throughout the month of August, scouts went out individually to beaches around Wilmington to clean them up. Scouts earned service hours from this experience, and beaches were cleaned in the process – all while staying safe during these difficult times.
